How to buy the correct van pipe tube carrier
For many tradesman of the UK a van pipe tube can be an afterthought when looking to install any kind of roof bars, roof racks or roof equipment system.
Imagine the scenario. You set off to work of a morning in your van and along the way make your regular stop at the local builders / plumber’s merchants etc to collect your supplies needed for the daily job ahead. Part of that kit might include copper or metal pipe, conduit, cable’s etc. As normal you arrive at your destination and open up the back of your van only to find that your freshly purchased supplies have rolled around in the back and damaged the van interior, other supplies and more, not to mention the unprofessional look that this gives to your customer.
This is where a van pipe tube carrier adds value to your work setup.
The vast majority of quality van pipe tube carriers are manufactured from either plastic or aluminium. Although there is no concrete scientific case study to say which is better each has its own beneficial selling points.
Plastic is lightweight and is predominantly weather resistant. Plastic pipe tube carriers are ideally suited for lightweight products.
Aluminium pipe tube carriers are highly resistant to corrosion, extremely lightweight, feature plastic end caps that are aerodynamically shaped to save wind drag which contributes to fuel efficiency and aesthetically look more professional.
What will you be carrying?
What you will be carrying in your van pipe tube is an important consideration. Van pipe tubes are available in two main standard sized lengths: 2 metres or 3 metres long so be sure to consider how long are the pipes you are carrying as well as do you carry off cut pieces of pipe or cabling.
Plastic pipe tube carriers are intended for use with lightweight products such as plastic ducting etc and should not be loaded with more than 10kg worth of load. The tube is usually 110mm in diameter and 2.5mm thick with a hinged clip type.
Single aluminium pipe tube carriers will take up to 30 lengths of 15mm diameter copper tube and carries up to a maximum weight of 25kg. The pipe tubes are constructed from anodised aluminium and come with cast swivel end caps suitable for using padlocks to secure your contents safely and securely in position and guard against theft.
Dual aluminium pipe tube carriers will take up to 60 lengths of 15mm diameter copper tube with a maximum weight of 35kg. Dual aluminium pipe tubes also feature separate internal plastic liners so that copper & plastic products can be stored without contamination or damage. These also feature extra security of your equipment through an in-built lock and key system.
Attaching your pipe tube
Attaching your pipe tube to your van is an important factor. Improper attachment to your van roof can have disastrous consequences for both what load you are carrying and the safety of other road users. Always make a routine point of checking the fixing points either before each trip or on a regular basis to avoid it coming completely off.
